Sagging Eyelids? There’s a Solution!

sagging eyelidsAs we get older, our skin begins to lose its elasticity and hangs lower and lower from our body every year. It’s not just your arms and neck that are affected, though. Sagging eyelids are a common problem that many people face, and the issue extends beyond cosmetic.

Eyelids can sometimes sag low enough that vision is affected. This combined with the undesirable appearance of droopy lids can leave one hoping for an answer. Consider your search over, because Pinke Eye Center in Shelton, Connecticut is the leading provider of blepharoplasty in the region!

Blepharoplasty Basics

Though the name may make it sound like some scary or dangerous medical procedure, blepharoplasty is actually a very safe, relatively simple, and fairly quick cosmetic surgery. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll be home within hours!

Before the surgery begins, you will undergo a thorough examination from the doctor so that proper planning can be done. You will talk about your medical history, your expectations of the surgery, and what kind of preparation you will need to do. This preparation includes not taking any blood thinning drug like ibuprofen to help prevent excessive bleeding during the surgery. If you smoke, you should quit for a few weeks prior to the surgery date.

The surgery itself just consists of the removal of excess skin, fat and other tissue from the eyelids. This can be done both on upper and lower lids all in the same visit. The incisions are placed in the natural crease of your eyelid, which will perfectly mask any scarring. After the incisions are closed and you’ve had some time to rest, you will be free to go. It’s important to note, however, that you will be unable to drive yourself afterward, and you will need to plan for a ride.

What Happens After Surgery?

It is completely normal to experience blurry vision, numbness in your eyelids, bruising around the eyes, and some pain as you heal. If your pain persists for than a few weeks, return to the doctor for a check-in.

You will need to carefully clean your eyelids, use special eye drops, and avoid rubbing your eyes for a couple weeks after surgery to steer clear of infection. Frequent use of ice packs is also strongly recommended to help with swelling. This should subside in about a week but could take up to two or more depending on the patient. Any strenuous activity such as running or lifting heavy objects could run the risk of tearing open the incision sites, so make sure to take it easy for at least the first week.
