3 Ways To Treat Your Dry Eyes This Summer

Finally, summer is here! Were you so excited to get outside in the warm air that you forgot how irritated your eyes are this time of the year?

Keep reading to learn about a few simple dry eye treatments to keep them feeling their best, so you can get back to enjoying your summer activities!

Stay Hydrated

You probably already use eye drops whenever your eyes feel itchy and dry. But did you know that there are other ways to keep your eyes hydrated?

When the air temperature is warmer outside, your body needs more water. Without enough water, you can quickly become dehydrated.

Making sure that you are drinking enough water will help to keep you well hydrated. This will, in turn, will help prevent your eyes from drying out and becoming irritated.

Also, if you’ve noticed that the air seems drier than usual inside your home or office, try using a humidifier in rooms where you spend the most time. A humidifier releases moisture back into the air, and this will significantly relieve your dry eyes.

Get Plenty of Rest

It’s easy to let a busy schedule, especially in the summer, get in the way of the proper self-care you need. Being on the go constantly can take a toll on your health and your eye health.

Help rest your eyes by taking breaks during the day. This can be as simple as closing your eyes for a few seconds, or minutes, several times a day. Or by sitting with an ice pack over your closed eyes for a rest once in a while.

Also, try reducing your screen time, whether working on your computer or binge-watching your favorite shows. By reducing screen use, you help prevent eye strain and keep your eyes from becoming dry, itchy, and irritated.

Make getting a full night’s sleep a priority. It might be hard at first, especially if your body has gotten used to getting by with only a few hours each night.

You may even have to ease back into actually sleeping for 8 hours or more. But once you do, you’ll notice a difference in how you feel. Your eyes will be healthier because of it!

Protect Your Eyes

Help protect your eyes from becoming overly dry and irritated this summer. Always wear sunglasses with UV protection when you’re outside. Even on cloudy days, the sun can still harm your eyes.

If you play sports outside, consider picking up a pair of sports goggles, even if you don’t usually wear glasses. These goggles can help prevent dirt, dust, and foreign objects from flying into your eyes and hurting them.

Help protect your eyes while swimming by wearing swim goggles whenever you are in a pool. Pool water contains chlorine which is very irritating and drying to your eyes.

If you spend a lot of time in a pool this summer, be sure to rinse your eyes thoroughly whenever you get out. Doing so will help keep them free from the irritants in the water.

If you suffer from dry eyes no matter the time of the year, you may have dry eye syndrome. Only an eye doctor can tell for sure.
