BOTOX for Migraines: How Does It Work?

BOTOX for Migraines: How Does It Work? Those who suffer from chronic migraines know that a seemingly invisible problem can have a huge impact on quality of life. If you have lived with chronic migraines for years, you have likely tried every possible treatment out there. Many treatments, unfortunately, can only treat a migraine once it occurs. Even if the treatment works, you will likely be in pain for a few hours before it kicks in. This means you still may miss work, your child’s baseball game, or a number of other things.

What if we told you there was a treatment that stopped migraines in their tracks before they even start? That’s where BOTOX® comes in!

Many people think of BOTOX® as a solely cosmetic procedure, but that couldn’t be farther from the case. While, yes, BOTOX® is extremely effective at preventing and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, it can also prevent migraines and even reduce excessive sweating. Here’s how BOTOX® can work for migraines.

What is a Migraine?

A migraine is a headache of varying intensity that is often accompanied by nausea and light sensitivity. Migraines are considered chronic when they occur 15 times per month over a three month period. Migraines can cause severe pain and difficulty completing everyday tasks. People with chronic migraines often have to take off a lot of time from work and miss out on many different life events.

How BOTOX® Can Help

BOTOX® is an FDA-approved preventative treatment for chronic migraine. BOTOX® has been shown to prevent on average 8 to 9 headache days per month, and only needs to be administered every 12 weeks. It will take two treatments (12 weeks apart) to determine how well BOTOX® is working for you.

Injection only takes around 15 minutes and can be done right in your doctor’s office. BOTOX® will be injected in 31 places around key parts of the head and neck. Don’t worry, these injections are shallow and will not penetrate deeply into the skin.
