BOTOX® is one of those things that everyone gets (or thinks about getting) but rarely ever talks about. When thinking about a cosmetic procedure, even the non-invasive kind, it’s important to gather as much information as you can beforehand. With the stigma around cosmetic enhancements, it is common for patients to not reach out. We think it’s silly for BOTOX® to be a mystery, so we’re here to answer all of the BOTOX® related questions that you’re too afraid to ask!
Will you bruise?
Bruising is not uncommon after BOTOX® injections, but skilled injectors will know how to minimize bruising as much as possible. There are some things you can do to prevent bruising, such as taking arnica before your appointment or avoiding vigorous activity afterward. Also, be sure to skip anything that will thin your blood. This includes any pain relievers, fish oil supplements and omega-3 supplements.
Can you lean backward or go on a plane?
There are a lot of myths surrounding BOTOX®, but we hear these quite a bit. Contrary to popular belief, it is ok to go on a plane or lay down to take a nap. You can also wear makeup, take a shower, and basically do anything you want. The only thing we suggest avoiding is physical activity, as this can increase bruising.
Will you look like you’ve “had work done”?
Results will be different for everyone, but a skilled injector will never overdo it with BOTOX®. We always tell patients that less is better than too much, and that they can always come back for more if they want it.
Will it hurt?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but you should not feel any intense pain. Before BOTOX injections, your doctor will numb the area. If you feel anything, it will be a pinching feeling or mild discomfort. You should not feel pain during your injections! Be sure to tell your doctor if the injections feel like anything more than a poke.
What age should you be to get BOTOX®?
While most people imagine people in their 40’s and 50’s getting BOTOX® cosmetic injections, this isn’t always the case. It is becoming increasingly more common to get BOTOX® in your 20’s and 30’s. This is often referred to as “baby BOTOX®” and is used as a means of preventing wrinkles. Many people who get BOTOX® already have wrinkles, but there is strong evidence that preventative BOTOX® works.
